Leading Photo-sharing social network Instagram has followed Facebook’s lead and has now quietly launched ‘Instagram Lite’ app for Android, in a bid to attract more users in developing countries with slow internet connectivity.
The Facebook-owned social network hasn’t officially announced the Lite app for Android but it is now available on Google Play Store.
The new app is only 573KB in size as compared to the around 32MB package of the main Instagram App.
The lite version is essentially built for places where people have connectivity issues, low storage or high data charges, as is its description on Play Store.
“The Instagram Lite app is small, allowing you to save space on your phone and download it quickly,” reads its description on Play Store.
The new version, just like the older, allows users to use functions such as filters, edits, uploads, create stories, and explore.

It is, however, not possible to post videos or send direct messages.
Reports indicate that Instagram Lite is currently being tested only in Mexico and is not yet widely launched.
Recently, Instagram launched Instagram TV as it hit one billion monthly active users. It’s been growing at roughly 100 million users every four months, with much of that coming from the developing world.
