A 20 year old woman on Wednesday gave birth at Uhuru Park after losing her hotel job and later kicked out of a lodging in Nairobi’s Muthurwa area because she could not raise Sh50.
Rebecca Atieno had nowhere to go and was at the time heavily pregnant. She had separated from her baby’s father and her family was miles away in Kisumu.
All alone in the city, Atieno walked to the recreational park perhaps to recollect her thoughts but little did she know, it was here she would meet her bundle of joy.
Her water broke at around 2PM and then kicked in the labour pains. 30 minutes later, she gave birth to her daughter whom she named Hope.
A good samaritan who found her under a tree called for help and the St John’s Ambulance personnel performed an emergency procedure and later rushed her and the baby to Kenyatta National Hospital.
The new mother had prior to giving birth to baby Hope, gone for two antenatal check ups at Bahati Hospital in Eastlands.
A local daily also reports that Atieno has a Maasai blanket and a single pack of diaper for her child.
Here are some comments from the online community:
So she lost her job because of being pregnant, NO HOME, HOUSE, RENT. Then safely delivers at Uhuru Park yet the government claims that Maternity if FREE? This is SAD!!

Her name is Rebecca Otieno, 20 years of age. She gave birth in Uhuru Park after being kicked out of her landlord.
Shame on you Kenyan middle class for donating to a charity run by the wife of the richest man in Kenya. The same man who's supposed to provide FREE MATERNAL CARE.

Dear Governor @MikeSonko, use of public toilets at Uhuru Park should be FREE! A pregnant woman was denied access to public toilet. Never mind she had been kicked out of a Ksh50 per day Lodge in Muthurwa. @richybosire pic.twitter.com/lGjvvOsPmv

Dear, @EstherPassaris. That lady who delivered in Uhuru Park was taken to hospital and is now due for discharge. She has nowhere to go, as she had been thrown out of her room due to rent arrears. Kindly take up this case as a matter of urgency and do let us know how we can help.
