“Napenda mwanaume anipe kipigo kidogo siyo mwanaume mnaishi miaka yote, halafu hata kukupiga kofi kidogo hakupigi,” (I like a man who beats me up occasionally, not one I’d to spend several years with without hitting me, even just a slap) Wema said.
While domestic violence is condemned in most parts of the world, among the Soninke’s it is an act of love on the man’s part.
For instance, a 19 year old woman from the aforementioned ethnic group told the Independent that she felt like “an animal that had to be disciplined.”
“As time passed, I came to believe that my husband beats me only when he is at the peak of his love for me.”
