A County Officer in Vihiga was arrested on Thursday evening for irregularly including his wife on the county payroll.

The officer, whose name has not been revealed by the police, is said to have paid his wife over Ksh500,000.

The suspect is claimed to have registered his wife’s name as a ghost worker.

According to Mbale Police Station head, the suspect was arrested alongside the county payroll manager over the scandal.

Confirming the incident, Vihaga county Public Service Executive Paul Mbuni told the Nation that the suspect’s wife is not an employee of the county government but has since been earning every month.

He further noted that Governor Wilber Ottichilo’s administration is currently fighting ghost workers who are in the county’s payroll.

Mbuni also revealed that there are plans by the county government to have a complete overhaul of the payroll.

The two suspects are currently locked up at the Mbale Police Station as the police carry out investigations concerning the issue.
