Ugandan Woman Convicted Of FGM In UK, Becomes The First In The Country

A 37 year old Ugandan woman is the first person to be found guilty of performing female genital mutilation (FGM) on her daughter in the UK.

The Crown Prosecution Service told the jury that spells and curses paraphernalia intended to stop her from being arrested were also found in her home.

The Ugandan born woman is said to have also coached her daughter to lie so that she would not be arrested.

She was charged committing FGM with alternate charge of failing to protect a child from the risk of FGM. The prosecution said that the girl was taken to hospital after loosing a lot of blood. They told the jury that what the mother had done to the daughter was a sickening offence.

“We can only imagine how much pain this vulnerable young girl suffered and how terrified she was,” she said.

“Her mother then coached her to lie to the police so she wouldn’t get caught, but this ultimately failed.”

The judge in case said that she would not be lenient on the case and that the woman should expected a long jail sentence for he actions.

She will be sentenced on March 8 but the judge ordered that she remains in police custody.

Her partner was acquitted of the offence. The conviction received a myriad of reactions with the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan saying that the conviction sent “a clear message to those who practise this barbaric act.”

FGM is practiced in some African, Asian and Middle Eastern cultures but is prohibited in many countries including both United Kingdom and Uganda where the woman hails from.
