Uchumi Supermarket Employees Demonstrate Over Salary Arrears

Uchumi Supermarket employees are currently demonstrating right infront of their company headquarters after the company failed to pay their salaries for the last 3 months. The employees are demanding to be addressed by the company CEO, Julius Kipngetich.

Furthermore, the Uchumi supermarkets employees salaries are always paid as late as 23rd of the following month. Any effort to question this has seen employees get intimidated by the top managers.

The employees have also claimed that NSSF, NHIF and PENSION FUNDS are all not being submitted in time with almost all of them being in arrears. The company guaranteed loans are also not being serviced as the company retains the remittance without forwarding to the intended recipient.

In 2016, the union took the company to court over mistreatment of staff by the company bosses.

The supermarket closed some branches in the middle of the night on March 21st 2016 without notice,  after which employees were issued with redundancy notices.

The Union KUCFAW on behalf of the employees filed a petition on the matter. They obtained court orders barring the employer from continuing with exercise until the matter is lawfully done. The company later decided to remove 131 employees from the payroll without any notice or inter party agreement with the Union.
