Sahle-Work Zewde, a native of Ethiopia has been appointed as the United Nations Special Representative to the African Union and the Head of the United Nations Office to the African Union taking after Haile Menkerios.
She previously served as the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) since 11 March 2011 making her the first person to hold the position in the newly created office by the then Secretary General, Ban- Ki Moon, at the level of Under-Secretary-General.

Ms Sahle-Work has three decades of progressively responsible experience at national, regional and international levels that is important in strengthening the partnership between the United Nations and the African Union in the area of peace and security.
She is the first woman appointed to this position.
