Ruiru member of parliament Simon Ng’ang’a has tabled a private motion to have the government designate demonstrations zones so that the right to assembly may not be infringed.
“Noting that demonstrating and picketing in the cities and major towns in the country has many occasions resulted in destruction, loss of lives, property and public disorder leading to the creation of a very unfavorable business environment. This House resolves that this government should designate specific areas and streets for picketing and demonstrations,” he said when allowed to the floor.

He was of the opinion that designating demonstrations would reduce the destruction of property and loss of lives that is associated with protests in major cities. Simon Ng’ang’a said that this would also reduce police confrontation with the demonstrators.
This motion comes among complaints by NASA saying that police were the ones creating chaos in their demonstrations and allowing militia to also disrupt their peaceful protests. NASA has even threatened to sue the IG Boinett and CS Matiang’i for infringement of the right to Assembly under Article 37 of the constitution.
