University of Nairobi (UoN) Vice Chancellor Prof Peter Mbithi is a morally inept megalomaniac, hell bent on running the institution to the ground.
Kahawa Tungu had exclusively ran a story on how the sex pest defiled his niece Teresia Ndunge before giving her a job at the Institution thus stirring a family feud.
While his poor management skills are not disputable, the man has taken it a notch higher and is now running UoN like his private business.
A probe has exposed how Mbithi is using cronies to bar the University Governing Council legally constituted under the Education and gazetted by Education CS Fred Matiang’i under the Education from operating.
Since January 2016, Matiang’i has made fair and well meaning efforts to appoint a strong and independent governing council for the UON, a move that has met unfathomable, ruthless defiance and opposition by Mbithi who through his cronies led by Thadayo Obanda have crippled the revered Institution.
Obanda and cohorts of judicial activists have since obtained numerous court orders barring Matiang’i from forming a strong and independent council that will not tow Mbithi’s line.
Matiang’i first tried to disband the existing councils of all public universities which were not appointed in accordance with the Education Act. Mbithi through his proxies obtained a court order barring Matiang’i from doing so. So Matiang’i changed tack and decided to wait for the councils terms to end, incidentally most of them were coming to an end in Feb 2017 (4 years after their initial appointment).
When the council’s term came to an end CS Matiang’i gazetted the appointment of a new council for the UON together with other public universities on 14th March. The UON council as constituted by the CS comprised of Timothy Mwangi Kiruhi (Chairman), Meshack Kidenda, Victoria Otieno, Mahat Somane, Peter Maangi Mitiambo, Jane Wanjiru Michuki.
The matter has been seen 7 cases filed which begs the question, why a VC would be against the supreme and Independent administrative organ of the university that is supposed to approve the university budget and hiring academic staff including the VC.
In fact, Obando in a separate suit in 2016, managed to bar Matiang’i from meddling in University of Nairobi matters.
It has been said that at one time President Uhuru Kenyatta, in front of Matiang’i and PS Collete Suda questioned an embarrassed Mbithi on the continued barring of the council.
UoN is operating without a Council, which has never happened in the history of any public university in Kenya. As it stands, the council’s functions such as graduation, budgeting and hiring of staff are going on illegally. The only reason why Mbithi is against an independent council is so that his treachery and thieving can go on as long as and to the extent that he chooses.
