President Uhuru has ordered the Kenya Revenue Authority to audit its employees living ‘large’ yet they pay little taxes.
Speaking during the official launch the integrated tax system for KRA, President Uhuru issued a warning to officials saying that those found guilty of reporting less income, will be charged in court.
He urged that those whose lifestyles do not reflect the tax they pay must declare the source of their wealth and contribute accordingly.
The President urged KRA to employ technology measures which will ensure that everybody pays taxes and those who try to evade should be prosecuted so as to show the seriousness of the matter.
“Traders operating fake electronic tax registers and pocketing the VAT should also be brought to book. The law must reflect the seriousness of tax collection and the consequences of default,” he said.
He also urged KRA to create a close relationship with county governments so as to ensure that tax collection is devolved.
