The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has announced an increase in the cost of power in the month of February.
This is a result of depending on thermal generators instead of the cheaper hydro sources.
Power consumers will at the end of the month pay Sh4.51 per unit of electricity consumed up from Sh4.30 in the previous month.
The Fuel Cost Charge (FCC) will after the revision hit an all time high since October 2014.
The Ministry of Energy has said that the country’s hydroelectricity generating projects, including Sondu Miriu and the Seven Forks in Embu, are performing poorly.
Water levels are also at a point where the country could be forced to increasingly rely on expensive thermal power plants hence a rise in power prices.

“If the dam level goes down, the implications are that we will have to use a lot of thermal. The effect is that if the water levels further go down, we will have to start running Rabai and Kipevu I, II and II,” CS Energy, Charles Keter said.
The cost of power has risen in the past one and a half years risen by 21 per cent.
