A police Officer has joined a list of Kenyans who have donated to a 26-year old man who attempted to smuggle daughter from Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) over lack of money to clear hospital bill.
The officer who has identified himself as Inspector Emmanuel Tammoh from Kangemi, Nairobi, donated Ksh56,000 to Bonface Murage Wangechi at Milimimani law courts on Tuesday.
Tammoh, head of a Police Camp at Kangemi, joins a list of leaders and celebrities who came to the rescue of Murage among them Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko, Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu owino and celebrated journalist Larry Madowo.
According to Mr Tammoh, he arrived at KNH to clear the hospital bill but was told the money was remitted fully on Monday.
He then proceeded to court where the accused was being sentenced.
“After that I proceeded to Milimani Law Courts where I was to meet Boniface Murage and donate the money to him,” said Tammoh.
The officer told journalists that he was moved by circumstances that forced Murage to commit the offence.
“I have come to help this man not because I am a police officer but because I am a Kenyan full of passion to help people,” said Tammoh.
He reiterated that he was not supporting smuggling but was acting out of compassion.
“It is not that we are supporting what he did, but maybe he committed the offence out of poverty.”
He also revealed that he was among the officers who rescued people at Dusit D2 Hotel during the 14 Riverside attack in Nairobi.
On Tuesday, Resident Magistrate Muthoni Nzibe handed Boniface Murage a three month suspended sentence after he pleaded guilty.
His sentence means he will not go to prison immediately but will be under state scrutiny to ensure that he does not commit an offense.
If he commits an offense Murage would have to face the three month custodial sentence.
He was arraigned before Milimani Law Courts on Monday and charged with attempting to smuggle his daughter out of hospital using a carrier bag.
His case went viral after Kenyans rallied behind him.
On Monday night, Governor Sonko announced that he had secured the freedom of Murage’s wife and baby held at KNH.
Posting on his Facebook page, the governor noted that he had settled the bill as well as taken the mother and her baby for shopping.
“I’ve spoken to Charles Liewa who will represent him pro-bono,” Madowo stated.
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino had also offered to settle the hospital bill and legal expenses for Boniface.

However, he was beaten to settle the bill for the mother and her daughter by governor Sonko.
Babu mentioned that he had selected a laywer, Peter Omingo, to represent the accused and assured that he would settle the expense “out of his own pocket.”
Celebrated BBC Africa journalist Larry Madowo also divulged that he had spoken to his brother who is a lawyer who represented Boniface in court on Tuesday.
