Nuns Call For Dissolution Of Assumption Sisters Of Nairobi Over Embezzlement Of Funds By Their Senior

A number of Catholic nuns at the Assumption Sisters Of Nairobi (ASN) are calling for the dissolution of the body following several allegations of embezzlement of funds by their senior, Sr Bernadette Ndele Munyao.

The money amounting to over Ksh170 million was withdrawn from ASN accounts at Prime Bank, GT Bank and NIC. At Prime Bank, the accounts affected include 2000101299, 2000101305, 3000035472, 3001035488, 3000035460 and 200083760. In GT, Sr Munyao is said to have withdrawn funds from account number 2140013999, a salary account of the Fr William Fryda Management.

She also stretched to make withdrawals from account number 1005392183 of the NIC Bank. Sources intimate that some money from Prime Bank was transferred to this account before being withdrawn.

The scandal involves Sr Munyao and a certain Ms Christine who was introduced to the Banks by ASN lawyer Mrs Wambugu.

It is alleged that some senior Central Bank managers were used to having the monies released from the bank accounts. Sources also say that a court order to have the money released from these bank accounts was also fraudulently acquired from Judge Sila Munyao through his elder brother Mr Zachariah Baraza.

GT Bank accounts in Westlands had over Ksh15 million and withdrawals began in December 2017 while withdrawals from Prime Bank which had over Ksh150 million began in February 2018. Withdrawal periods for NIC Bank are not yet clear.

“These are the monies that made the previous board of St Mary’s Mission Hospital resign when they were pushed to fraudulently admit that the money was used in the Hospital. The superior (Sr Munyao) now has a board that is willing to cover up these expenditures,” says our source.

The board is led by one Mr Anthony Musyoki Mbandi. It is alleged that Mbandi has been given clear instructions by the Sr Munyao to get rid of some senior managers at the Hospital and create room for direct appointments.

“The hospitals are now going to be filled by Kamba employees as it was during the time of Sr Maria Felix. The former board that resigned had objected to direct appointments,” hints our source.

Following the scandal, the body has been at the centre of media spotlight. Sr Munyao, the main suspect, has been gagging the sisters trying to know how the information leaked to the media.

This has seen a tussle ensue between Sr Munyao and her juniors prompting a meeting that she convened on February 16 at the J J McCarthy Prayer House.

The superior, as she is referred to by her juniors, has a list of sisters she is trying to expel whose names we cannot mention for fear of victimization.

Kahawa Tungu has also learnt that Sr Munyao has not been able to explain how the money was spent, hence a change of guard and intimidation of her juniors has been the easiest way through.

“If Sr Bernadette Ndele Munyao dares to expel any of the sisters, the Holy Father Pope Francis, should consider dissolving Assumption Sisters of Nairobi (ASN) just like he did to the Apostles of Jesus last year,” says one of the agitated sisters who sought anonymity.

“All we want is Sr Bernadette Ndele Munyao and Sr Maureen Nakhungu to tell us where they took all the money that they withdrew from Prime Bank, GT Bank and the Hospital,” she adds.
