Junior government officers and members of the of the Ngirita Family are unable to raise bail money and securities as was required by the High Court.

Justice Hedwig Ong’udi in June ordered the National Youth Service (NYS) Sh.468 million suspects to present a bond of Sh.5 million, produce sureties of Sh.2 million each and deposit cash bail of Sh.1 million in court.

The suspects were also ordered to stay away from their offices unless with police supervision. It was also required that they deposit their travel documents in court.

Reports indicate that the public servants cannot raise funds to secure their release, some of whom were storekeepers at the institution. The others are employees who are said to have been sent to collect foodstuff from the Mechanical Transport Branch (MTB) stores.

The NYS staffers are; Jackson Juma, Ms Stella Biwott, Timothy Rotich, Isaiah Adalo, Mr David Kirui, Mr Jamal Duba, Mr Julius Airo and Ms Keziah Mwangi.

The MTB storekeepers are Welenalo Malupi and Ferdinand Odoyo.

The Ngiritas; Lucy Wambui, Ann Wanjiku Wambere Ngirita, Phyllis Njeri Ngirita, Jeremiah Gichini Ngirita and his wife Catherine Wanjiku Mwai are still in remand after their counsel Cliff Ombeta unsuccessfully pleaded with chief magistrate Douglas Ogoti to reduce their bail terms.

They argued that their accounts have been frozen and assets seized.

So far 30 of the accused persons have been released, including PS Youth Affairs Lilian Omollo and former NYS Director General Richard Ndubai.

The DPP Noordin Haji directed that the DCI ascertains that the sureties and bond are not proceeds of crime.
