Nairobi MCAs pass Law to name city streets and roads after themselves

While debating the naming of city roads and streets, Nairobi County Assembly amassed all the city’s history for themselves by passing a motion to compel the county executive headed by Governor Dr. Evans Kidero to review and change names on several roads and streets within the city county.

The Assembly Deputy Speaker Ken Ngondi stated that the Governor, the Speaker, the majority and minority leaders plus himself should have roads named after them by virtue of being the first officials to serve under the devolved dispensation.

Some members however wanted the names of insignificant things and people changed and replaced with true heroes. Women members urged for gender equity, saying a road should be named after First Lady Margaret Kenyatta in recognition of her campaign to reduce maternal deaths through Beyond Zero.

Governor Evans Kidero and Senator Mike Sonko have in the past attempted to name a road and a street after them to no success. Kidero’s road – a split road on Langata road which had stayed unused for long as it was blocked – led to political uproar when county assembly members allied to Jubilee opposed the move leading to the removal of the signpost.

Senator Sonko, on the other hand, ‘grabbed’ the road  connecting Outering Road to Buruburu estate through Mutindwa market shortly after President Uhuru launched the expansion of Outer Ring road. However, the county government declared it illegal and pulled down the signpost which residents say has since been re-erected.

“Mr Speaker, some roads in Lakisama ward (Luckysummer Estate off Babadogo) have no names and it would be a good thing to have my name on one of them as well as all MCAs,” said Samuel Onduru, area MCA.
