Nancy Kinuthia, the mother of Naftali Njahi Kinuthia who is the main suspect in the murder of sixth year medical student at Moi university, Ivy Wangeci said that her son had a calm demeanor and was harmless.
Mrs kinuthia said that she was aware of the relationship between her son and Wangeci but was not aware if they had broken up. She said that she had seen her son two weeks ago and he seemed okay and she could not believe that he could have murdered the student. She however said that she had never met Wangeci but she had seen her photos and her son had alluded that he wanted to marry her.
“It is like they had broken up but I don’t know if they had reconciled… he doesn’t have a temper and he has never harmed anyone, he can’t, I don’t understand what this is,” Ms Kinuthia said.
She said that her son did not have anger issues and not given her trouble growing up.
His father and uncle were enroute to Eldoret to try and find out what transpired between the two that led her first born son to murder the student.
According to eyewitness account, Naftali Kinuthia, hit the student – who was heading to her hostel – with a blunt object on the head severally before slithering her throat with a panga.
Reports indicate the man had hidden the weapons in a gunny bag, to avoid suspicion when he accessed the hospital.
After the incident, the man attempted to flee but was attacked by angry members of public who attempted to lynch him.
Shortly after, the police arrived at the scene rescuing him.
The man, who is said to be an employee of a betting firm in Nairobi, is currently admitted at the hospital as police continue with investigations.
Following the incident, medical students held peaceful demonstrations.
Moi University Vice Chancellor Isaac Kosgey, confirmed the incident and said the institution is working closely with the police to investigate the incident.
The motive behind the cold blood killing is yet to be established.
