Two Kenyan tech start-ups, MedAfrica and Kommunity Bora, have been selected as a finalist for the Ericsson Application Awards 2012. The challenge themed “Apps for the Networked Society” , aims to promote innovations from a variety of environments, places and situation as well as by connecting people, things and places to empower individuals and society.
MedAfrica is an e-Health focused app while Kommunity Bora submitted an app which seeks to help reduce road accidents. The app is funnily called Nduru.

MedAfrica’s main challengers are NabdaCare from Egypt with the Health Book app. The two will have to fight it out in the final award ceremony in Sweden on Tuesday. They will also be battling for the overall top prize with both the Egyptians and Chinese developers who are the other finalists.

The following four finalists will travel to witness the award in Stockholm, Sweden on May 22nd at 11am CET. (Click on the links to view the submissions)
In the student category:

- – Clio Squad from China
In the company category:
- – MedAfrica from Kenya
- – Nabda Care from Egypt
The third place prize goes to:
- – Kommunity Bora (Kenya) in the student category
- – Buzzle Technology (Indonesia) in the company category
Speaking to us after the announcements were communicated to them, MedAfrica’s Steve Mutinda said
“We are quite enthusiastic to be a finalist on this competition which puts the mobile application on the map globally as a solution to bridge the knowledge gap on accessing health related information and content in emerging markets.”
