Judicial officers seeking to attend conferences and seminars will be required to seek Chief Justice David Maraga’s permission.

In a letter copied to Chief Registrar of Judiciary Anne Amadi, the CJ noted that ‘organisations and agencies conducting such activities will be expected to address invitations to my office for nomination of participants.’

The CJ also says that some judges, judicial officers and staff have complained that others are favored because they get one too many invites to seminars, conferences.

Maraga also ordered that all conferences, seminars, trainings, field visits and retreats organised by the Judiciary go through his office first.

In the letter, the CJ further states that only judges will travel by air, as magistrates and other staffers travel by road or rail.

Treasury CS, Henry Rotich while reading this year’s budget, reduced the Judiciary’s budget by Sh.2 Billion, allocating it Sh.15.2 billion.

Last week, Judiciary Human Resources Acting Director L. A Onyango advised workers to take advantage of the services provided under NHIF cover, since the cover provided by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) will not be available as from June 7.

The suspension of medical cover, Onyango said, was due to lack of funds from the National Treasury.

“This is to inform all judges, judicial officers and staff that the judiciary medical services have been suspended effective June 7 due to insufficient funds,” said Onyango.

The recent budget cut could force the arm of government to streamline its activities such as the employment of more judges and the construction of High Courts in every county.
