Maina Kiai and Other 7 Other Columnists Ditch Nation Media for “Silencing Dissenting Voices”

Some of the most consistent and powerful columnists in the country have now resolved not to pen their opinions in any of the Nation Media Group (NMG) owned platforms because the media house is solely intent on pleasing the leadership of the country and not fair journalism.

In a statement released few hours ago, Maina Kiai led Prof. Nic Cheeseman, Rasna Warah, Prof. Gabrielle Lynch, George Kegoro, Fr. Dolan, Muthoni Wanyeki and Kwamchetsi Makoha in issuing a statement disassociating themselves from the NMG or any of its platforms.

The statement further pushes the struggling media house into a corner as it now focuses more on profits more than objectivity.

The 8 indicated that their actions have been prompted by consistent actions of NMG which have eroded the media house’s status as champion of free and independent media in the country. Some of the actions listed as evidence to this deterioration of Aga Khan owned media outlet includes the firing of Gado and Dennis Galava as well as the recent mass sacking of those thought to be having any independent minds in the newsroom.

The opinion leaders further blamed the ineffective Nation Media group board as incapable of guiding the media house to protect the freedom and independence of the media in the country. Their letters to the board have reportedly been ignored.

We are waiting for a statement from Nation Media Group over this development.

The 8 have been NMG contributors and opinion leaders as follows.

George Kegoro – Sunday Nation since 2011

Rasna Warah – Daily Nation since 2006

Muthoni Wanyeki – Saturday Nation and The East African since 2001

Father Gabriel Dolan – Saturday Nation since 2008

Maina Kiai – Sunday Nation and Saturday Nation since 1997

Prof. Gabrielle Lynch – Saturday Nation since 2014

Pro. Nic Cheeseman – Sunday Nation since 2004

Kwamchetsi Makokha – Daily and Saturday Nation since 1999
