Tanzanian president John Pombe Maghufuli has sought the counsel of retired leaders to guide him on which direction to take when leading the country.
In his opening remarks he told the retired leaders that he would disclose to them his plans and achievements in return for their suggestions on what he can do better. He said that the main goal was to for the young people to learn from the experiences of the elders so that they can have candid conversations

Maghufuli stated that he was lucky to have worked with the retired leaders during their regime and that he was the only president in Africa that enjoyed guidance from three retired presidents
The Tanzanian president said that he liked being among elders as he ruled the country as they provided him with guidance.
He thanked the retired leaders for honoring his invite even when he had not given them the agenda for the meeting. He said that it was nice seeing them as he had not seen most of them in a while.
This was the first time the president was meeting the retired leaders together.
