Kenya Airways (KQ) engineers and technicians have been on a go slow since yesterday (Tuesday) in what the national carrier says is an ‘illegal industrial action’ in contravention of the provisions of Labour Relations Act.
The strike is in its second day, where the staffers are said to have slept in the hangar, yester night after the management scrapped a regrading system without notice.
Chief Operating Officer (COO) Jan de Vegt, called for the employees to report to their line managers or supervisors by 1 pm yesterday.
The technical staff has been given the third and final warning by the management in which they will be ‘summarily dismissed without further recourse’ immediately.
”Note that if you have not, to the satisfaction of the management, responded to either of the previous calls and still fail to appropriately respond to this third call by immediately reporting for duty or carrying out the instructions issued, you will be deemed to have absconded your duties without lawful cause and or be insubordination of lawful instructions issued to you by your employer and hence guilty of gross misconduct and therefore liable to be summarily dismissed without further recourse,” said Mr Vegt in a letter dated November, 28.

The three calls, were not heeded to by any of the staffers up until today (Wednesday).
In July, KQ pilots went on yet another go slow for an unknown reason but their union, KALPA had earlier on in the year called for the resignation of then board chairman and CEO, Titus Naikuni.
