Female nurses working at Kenyatta National Hospital’s orthopedic wing are complaining of sexual harassment from the male patients.
The nurses say that the patients on the sixth floor of the hospital openly make sexual comments while some grab, shove or even threaten them.
A nurse who sought anonymity told the Nation that: “Last year, someone described the colour of the undergarment I was wearing because as I attended to others, he looked under my dress.”
Another said that the patients who sometimes sneak beer and drugs to the wards have openly told her that they want to “sleep with me.”
The Nation reports that the orthopedic wards, without security, is already congested with a ward meant for 60 patients, being occupied by at least 106 patients.
Nine nurses, the Nairobi chair of Kenya National Association of Nurses Stella Githaiga said, have made the same claims.
On Saturday a care giver, Mildred Akinyi was hospitalized after getting assaulted by 5 relatives of a patient she was attending to but later died.
According to hospital sources, Nurse Mildred Akinyi was breaking the news to the five relatives (one male and four females) when they pounced on her with kicks, blows and even hitting her with a blunt object leading to multiple injuries.
