Uchumi Supermarkets Chief Executive Officer Julius Kangogo Kipngetich has been selected as an independent non-executive director of The Standard Group.
“The Board of The Standard Group PLC is pleased to announce the appointment of DR. JULIUS KANGOGO KIPNGETICH CBS, EBS, as an Independent Non-Executive Director with effect from 7th October 2017,” the company announced today.
This comes after the board sacked former CEO Sam Shollei following a conflict of interests during the campaign period earlier this year.
The group is reportedly looking beyond the media for their next potential CEO.

The company was also rumored to have shortlisted some of the possible replacements for the position.
Joe Odindo who is the current Managing Editor, Joe Munene (Standard Media Head of Broadcast), Conrad Nkutu (Uganda), Cyril Nabutola, Dr Githinji Gitahi (AMREF), Julius Kipngetich (Uchumi), Tom Mshindi of Nation Media or Wachira Waruru of Royal Media were among the potential replacements rumored.
Dr Kipnegitch appointment comes with vast experience in several sectors after previously serving as the Director and Chief Executive Officer of Kenya Wildlife Service, the Managing Director of Investment Promotion Centre and Chief Operating Officer of Equity Group Holdings Limited to name a few.
The appointment would put him in strong contention to take over from board chairman Robin Sewell in what could be the beginning of a company restructure.
