Former Maendeleo Ya Wanawake chairperson Jane Kiano has died.
Kiano, a member of the Council of Eminent Persons of Murang’a died at the Nairobi Hospital as she fought a brave battle against cancer of the lungs.
“She battled bravely against lung cancer and we are very proud of her. She died at 10.30,” a family representative said in a statement.
The deceased was the wife to Kenya’s first PhD holder Julius Gikonyo Kiano.
She was also the Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization National chairperson between 1971–1984 before serving as the National Council of Women of Kenya chairperson from 1999 to 2003.

Between 1982 to 2013 Kiano, 74, served as the Alliance Francaise president and at the same time as the Nairobi City Commission Deputy chairperson (1988–1992).
She was one of the founding Commissioners of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) between 2009-2013.
