Kenyan Premier League and a nonprofit organization have partnered to launch Inmates 7-a-side Premier League in Kamiti and Naivasha Maximum Prisons.
Thirteen teams from Kamiti and twelve from Naivasha will grace the inaugural edition that was officially inaugurated Wednesday.
During the launch, KPL giants AFC Leopards played an exhibition match against Kamiti All Stars, a game that ended in a 3-3 draw.
The aim of the initiative is to among others help improve engagement between the inmates and the prison officers to impart positively on their work.

“Football has transformed our lives in many ways. Some of the players who featured for our team today only took up football when they got here. The world all over, football is known for uniting people and it is this aspect of the sport that has helped brought inmates together.
Even those who do not play have something to look forward to by coming to watch the team train and play, coaching, organizing matches, commentating, and preparing the pitch by setting up the goalposts and marking it. Football is proving to be a welcome distraction and it is giving us hope,” Daniel Omondi, the Kamiti Inmates Football Association president said.
