Police seized 88 bags of illegal sugar in Busia town on Sunday morning. The sugar was being smuggled into the country through the Kenya Uganda Border.
The illegal sugar, estimated to be worth at least KSh1.5 million, was packaged into 50kg bags and was being dispatched to different parts of the country.
Police confirmed that 20 bags were impounded in Bumala enroute to unkown destination and 68 bags discovered in a warehouse at Bulanda, on the outskirts of Busia.

“We have arrested one suspect in Bumala who was transporting 20 bags of sugar in a Probox to an unknown destination. In total, we have impounded 88 bags each weighing 50kgs,” Busia County Commander Wambua Katithi, confirmed to one of the dailies.
Mr Katithi also confirmed that the vehicles involved in the smuggling get involved in hit and runs as they try to escape from police contact.
“Last month alone, we lost five people in a case of hit and run and we suspect the cars used by smugglers are behind the deaths.”
The seize of illegal sugar and other goods comes after the major sugar scandal that led to imported sugar being contaminated with mercury.
