He resigned on January 12 saying that he had seized to gain the trust of Nairobi governor Mike Sonko. Rumors emerged that the two had fallen out over tendering processes and also due to influence from State House.
“Dear Nairobians, it is with a heavy heart that I resign my seat as elected Deputy Governor of Nairobi City County effective 1 pm on 31st Jan 2018. I regret I have failed to earn the trust of the Governor to enable me to drive Admin & Management of the county.
“Without fear, favor or ill will I step down to avoid abusing or betraying my oath of office to Kenyans, Nairobians & my family,” Igathe had stated
Governor Sonko said that the city would still work without Igathe and said that he would work closely work with the elected members of the county assembly to ensure service delivery for Kenyans.
There is currently a constitutional gap on the procedure to follow in case a deputy governor ceases to hold office. Kipchumba Murkomen said that he would sponsor a bill to bridge that lacuna as it now affects Nairobi and Nyeri counties.
