The late Dr Wahome Gakuru’s family is set to receive a Sh36 million compensation package that the county assembly has set aside.
The Budget and Appropriations Committee on Thursday tabled a report setting aside another Sh10 million meant to offset expenses incurred during the deceased’s burial.
According to Business Daily, Nyeri county MCAs have set aside more money for the Gakuru family than a Member of Parliament’s family gets when he/she dies in office. An MP’s family gets Sh10 million from their life insurance cover.
The ward representatives went further and set aside Sh20 million to pay for an insurance premium. The premium does not specify the beneficiaries as the late governor was rumored to have two wives and at least four kids.
The report will be debated by the house and if adopted, Governor Mutahi Kahiga will implement it.

Dr Gakuru died in a grisly accident along Murang’a-Thika road on November 7, 2017. He became the second Nyeri governor to die in office after Nderitu Gachagua lost the battle to cancer in February.
The deceased was laid to rest at his home in Kirichu, Nyeri county on November, 18.
