Nairobi county governor Mike Sonko has come up with a plan to reduce the hawker menace within Nairobi’s Central Business district.

The hawkers will be required to pair an annual fee of Ksh. 2000 and be given space outside the CBD in order to conduct their business.

Governor Mike Sonko said that the move will take at least one month and that the payment will reduce harassment of hawkers by the council officers.

The governor said that any hawker who flaunts the new rules will be charged in a court of law and that council officers should take videos to show proof of misconduct by hawkers.

The proposal also states that the council officers who are caught taking money from hawkers will be charged or face disciplinary action.

Governor Mike Sonko proposed that an eight member committee be selected to be in charge of space allocation.

He said that any hawker who sold space that was allocated to them would not be allocated a new space.
