Controversial Bishop Gilbert Deya has been released from prison on a 10 million shillings bond or bail of a similar amount by High Court judge, Justice Luka Kimaru.
Mr Deya has been in remand since 4th August, 2017. He was extradited from the UK for five counts of child abduction between the years 1999-2004 from Mountain View Estate.

His case was heard in December by Milimani Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi who allowed him a 1 million shillings bail or 2 million shillings bond. The bishop was also to deposit his travel documents at the court and report to the police station twice a week.
DPP appealed to this case and termed the ruling as a wrong discretion by the trial magistrate. Justice Luka suspended the release order by Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi and ruled the Bishop as a flight risk and declined to grant a request by the preacher to be released on bail.
Prosecution was given 90 days to conclude the trial as Mr Deya directed to remain in custody at Kamiti maximum prison.

Bishop Deya had appealed to the High Court through his Lawyer, John Swaka that he is suffering as an old, sickly man yet has been in remand since January following the Prosecution’s appeal on his bond.
Justice Luka Kimaru granted him bail earlier today and gave him stringent terms since he has a history of absconding and maligning the court.
