The government chemist has released the results of Shakira Vegetable oil which was found to be unfit for human consumption. It was discovered that the oil was contaminated with high levels of acid and peroxide.
The sample that was collected from Mandera contained a higher acid value than the set standard recommended by EAS standard which allows for 0.6mgKOH/g oil.
The government chemist declared the vegetable oil rancid and unfit for human consumption.
Surprisingly the Shakira vegetable oil did not have Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) certification but it was being sold in Mandera.
This comes in the wake of investigations of sugar containing mercury, lead and copper being sold to unsuspecting citizens . Parliament has already said that the report that was presented by the two committees tasked to probe the sugar saga as shoddy.
It is not the first time the market is hit by fake cooking oil. In 2014, eight top cooking oil manufacturers raised the alarm over thousands of tonnes of the commodity that have been released into the market without certification.
The Kenya Association of Manufacturers’ Edible Oils sub-sector expressed concern over what they termed increased importation and sale of uncertified edible oils that are unfit for human consumption.
