A section of Barclays Bank branch in Murang’a town was on Monday destroyed by fire.
Murang’a Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Julius Rutere confirmed the incident saying the fire began in the bank’s server room at around 1.30pm.
The county fire brigade who responded to the scene managed to contain the fire , preventing extensive damage.
Rutere said the fire might have been caused by an electric fault.
“So far now we are not suspecting any foul play we are taking the cause of the fire to be an electric fault but that is subject to confirmation. We will call the fire people to confirm the same,” the DCIO said.
He, further, noted that no one was injured during the incident, adding that the safe where money is stored was not affected.
The incident comes a day after the bank reported that a total of Sh11 million was stolen from its Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) around Nairobi.

In a statement, the bank said investigators were working hard to track down the criminals who raided its ATMs located in Buru Buru, Kenyatta National Hospital, the Mater Hospital and the Cinema Plaza during the long Easter weekend.
“We are working with investigative authorities to ensure that the perpetrators of this crime are brought to justice. We would like to reassure our customers that they can continue to access our services through our branch ATMs countrywide as well as our mobile and internet banking channels,’’ the bank said.
Police reports indicate some of the ATMs had no security personnel, surveillance cameras and others were smeared with jelly to conceal the events leading to the robbery.
