Suspended Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) CEO Ezra Chiloba’s personal assistant Abednego Ominde has been arrested.
Ominde was nabbed as he tried to make away with 14 files from the procurement and finance department.
He was arrested alongside acting IEBC Finance Director Agatha Wahome and accountant Fatma Jama.
Confirming the incident was the commission’s chairman, Wafula Chebukati saying: “Yes, I can confirm that the said individual who is a PA to the suspended CEO was nabbed at the basement parking with the files. I don’t want to speculate on the motive but you can tell.”
According to Chebukati, the Nairobi area DCIO is handling the matter.
Chiloba has defended Mr Ominde who he says “was going to run copies of the relevant documents in preparation for my return to work on September 14, 2018.”
“I personally requested copies of the relevant documents to be ready on my return to work. This is not unusual and therefore the officers should not be victimized for doing what they are supposed to do in good faith,” he said.
But the commission has denied claims of his returning to work. In a tweet, IEBC said that the “allegation of resuming office is misleading.”
The Show Cause letter to Mr. Chiloba of Aug 29th extended suspension till finalization of disciplinary proceedings. Allegation of resuming office is misleading. The case of office files is under police investigation – W.W. Chebukati
