Thuita Mwangi, former Foreign Affairs permanent secretary has dropped out of Laikipia governor race.
According to County Deputy Returning Officer George Odhiambo, the politician wrote a letter confirming that he was out of the hotly contested race.
“Last week we cleared three candidates to contest the gubernatorial race. But one of them, Mr Thuita, has written to us to say he will not be a candidate,” said Odhiambo.
Mwangi who was cleared by IEBC to run as an independent candidate days ago, did not explain his actions.
It’s not yet clear why the politician decided to opt out but it is said that the former PS might have developed cold feet as things get heated in Laikipia.
Mwangi lost to incumbent Governor Joshua Irungu in the Jubilee nominations but later announced that he will vie as an independent candidate and picked 29-year-old Silvia Museiya as his running mate.
His loss in the nominations was marred by controversy after Mwangi claimed Jubilee Party favoured Joshua Irungu. He later issued a statement saying that the entire process was flawed and should be repeated.
Irungu will now face former Laikipia West MP Ndiritu Muriithi who is also running as an independent candidate in the August Polls.
