High Court Justice Onesmus Makau of the Employment and Labour Relations Court has temporarily blocked deployment of Cuban doctors challenging the legality of their contract with the government.

In a petition filed by Conrad Maloba and Associates on behalf of three unemployed doctors, it was argued that Kenyan doctors should be given priority, in line with the Constitution.

According to CS Health Sicily Kariuki, the least paid Cuban doctor will earn Ksh.390, 270 and the highest paid will earn Ksh.450, 660. Qualified Kenyan doctors have argued that they should be hired since many are out there languishing in poverty and unemployment.

The half batch of the doctors who arrived on Tuesday were supposed to begin their deployment on 8 June but the case will be decided in court on 19 June.
