County officers have made random visits on Nairobi supermarkets, to spot-check retailers that are selling maize flour at more than the recommended Sh75 retail price.
During the raid the officials found that Eastmatt supermarket along Tom Mboya street within the CBD had failed to comply with the directive from the Ministry of Agriculture. The rest of the supermarkets had complied with the said directive.
“We were carrying out maize flour price compliance operation as part of our routine licensing inspections. We have gone to various supermarkets and most of the have complied with the government advise. It is only Eastmatt Supermarket which has not fully complied but the rest we have gone to have complied,” said Mr Akoko on Thursday.
The manager at Eastmatt supermarket however said that their suppliers are yet to reduce prices and therefore it was difficult for them to reduce the prices as well.
“Those who sell the maize flour to us have not reduced their prices to comply with the directive by the government and so it is really putting us at a tight spot adjusting our prices,” said Mr Mwangi.
The county officials have however said they will continue to make the random visit to ensure that the the said directive is adhered to.
