Kenya’s oldest stadium, City Stadium, will get a new artificial turf as soon as next month.
This has been confirmed by Judith Anyango, a board member of the Nairobi County sports department.
The work is set to commence next week. The new turf will be sourced from Mombasa County.
“We met governor Mike Sonko this morning in his office and we agreed to install the new turf so that the stadium can be used again for matches,” said Judith, who was accompanied by former internationals Musa Otieno and Dennis Oliech.
“We will meet the contractor who was awarded the work today to see how best the process can be fast tracked,” she added.
The stadium which was installed with the current turf in 2008 by the world’s body FIFA has been in disuse for a few years now as the surface is worn out.
The County government has pledged to give the stadium a major facelift and upgrade it to international standards as a long term plan.
