A woman accused of attempting to sell her last born child in Funyula constituency within Busia county has been charged.

The woman referred to MO in the charge sheet was arrested for trying to sell her one-year-and-half year old baby to Justus Ojanji at Sh300,000.

“On March 6, 2019, at Namboboto village in Samia ub-county within Busia County, being mother to SO, a boy child aged one year and six months, (you) offered him for sale to a Justus Odowa Ojanji at Sh300,000,” read the charge sheet.

Mo was arrested alongside a man suspected of facilitating the sale after police were tipped.

“On March 6, 2019 at Namboboto village, Samia sub-county facilitated the sale of SO, a baby boy to Justus Odowa Ojanji at Sh300,000,” read the second suspect’s charge sheet.

The mother of six, who appeared in court with her child, pleaded guilty to the offence.

On the other hand, the second suspect pleaded not guilty to facilitating the sale of the child, in violation of the Children’s Act.

The suspect told Principal Magistrate Samson Temu that he was approached by the woman to help her look for someone to buy her baby as she was a single mother struggling to raise her children.

“She came to me and told me she had six children and therefore was willing to sell her baby boy,” the second suspect said.

Besides the Sh300,000, terms of sale also required that a person buying the baby must have a child of their own.

After listening to the two suspects, the Magistrate directed that the intended buyer, who was not in court, be in arraigned on Monday before the case is heard and determined.
