AFC Leopards edged out Sony Sugar 1-0 at Machakos’ Kenyatta Stadium Sunday to move fourth in the KPL table standings.
Ingwe headed into the tie on the backdrop of a win and a draw in their previous outings and desperately needed the victory to ease pressure on coach Rodolfo Zapata.
Defender Salim “Shittu” Abdallah scored in the 52nd minute for the game’s lone goal to hand the 12-time Kenyan champions the lead.
Despite the upward move in the standings, Ingwe are still 14 points off leaders and arch rivals Gor Mahia and will need a miracle to win their first KPL in 20 years this season.
Zapata was nonetheless happy with his charges and how they played.
“I’m happy because of the performance. I believe it was a great performance. Sometimes we can win other times we can lose but, we cannot negotiate on playing good football.
“My players spoke for myself on the pitch,” the Argentine said.
In another game of the day, resurgent Sofapaka narrowly beat floundering Mathare United 3-2 to cut Gor’s lead to nine points.
K’Ogalo are currently away in Tanzania for the ongoing Cecafa Kagame Cup in Dar Es Salaam.
The coach Dylan Kerr’s side beat Vipers SC of Uganda 2-1 on Sunday to sail to the semi-finals.
