AccessKenya Group has  today announced that it is breaking ground to dig and lay its own Metro Fibre Optic Network infrastructure in Mombasa in its ongoing plans to build what will be the largest IP based fibre network in Kenya.

The network which will be initially laid around parts of Mombasa island will use full ring topology for uptime which will allow AccessKenya to deliver outstandingly high broadband speeds and 100 per cent redundancy to itsr corporate  and residential customers. Group MD, Mr Jonathan Somen, says the work on the infrastracture has commenced.

Mr Somen said AccessKenya Group Offices at TSS Building in Mombasa  will be connected to Seacom and Teams,  before the network is rolled out to other buildings.

In ring topology, the network is build in form of a ring which ensures that if one part of the network gets a cut, traffic is rerouted to the opposite side of the ring meaning no downtime for clients. Once the broken part is repaired, traffic is rerouted back to the original side of the ring. Ring topology ensures 100% uptime for all clients on the network.

The network will be Carrier Ethernet like Nairobi fibre network which is the latest technology that enables providers to deliver reliable services to their clients as well as new value added services like video conferencing, VOIP and other triple play services.

AccessKenya have chosen Enterprise Génèrale Malta Forrest (EGMF), a well established contractor and engineering company to manage the digging and laying of the physical infrastructure of the fibre network.  EGMF have been involved in numerous other fibre networks both in metropolitan areas as well as nationally around Kenya including AccessKenya’s Nairobi metro fibre network which is  Kenya’s first completely IP based fibre network.

AccessKenya already have 140km of metro fibre network covering over 250 buildings in Nairobi.  It has a large Wi-Max network in Kenya, as well as a long established Motorola wireless network that has approximately 3,000 square kilometers of coverage.  The Mombasa Metro Fibre will give the Group the ability to offer significantly higher speeds to its 6500 customers across fibre from its 5000 megabits of international fibre.
