Interior CS Fred Matiang’i while speaking at a vernacular radio station explained his role as the chief minister.

He refuted claims that he was put there as a cabinet prefect but said that he was placed there to monitor and streamline the delivery of national projects.

He said that his new role came with challenges as there was already an inbuilt culture of corruption, bribery and kickbacks.

“It is no secret that we have rogue government officials who solicit for bribes from contractors. The President is leading the war against corruption to address the issue of kickbacks,” Matiang’i said.

The CS revealed that meeting with development partners, donors and contractors  unearthed the scandals that are currently under investigation. Four Cabinet Secretaries had already been summoned by the DCI over the dams saga.

“We have held meetings with development partners, donors, contractors, and other stakeholders. This is how we unearthed most of the scandals that are currently under probe by investigating agencies and, as you are aware, the Government operates using taxpayers’ money, and the President, has tasked us with ensuring proper management of resources. Therefore, our primary responsibility is to ensure transparency and accountability in government expenditure.”

The Interior CS said that the that he had managed to fast track stalled projects  like the SGR phase 2A and the ring road section of Nairobi Eastern missing link.

“Due to a delay in the release of funds from the National Treasury, construction for the SGR Phase 2A and Ring Road section of Nairobi Eastern Missing Link had stalled, but it has since resumed. We are also monitoring the statuses of water projects across the country and the report will be ready soon,” he clarified.

Matiang’i was appointed chair the newly constituted National Development Implementation and Communication Committee, and will be deputized by his Treasury counterpart Henry Rotich.
