Nairobi County Government is counting millions in losses after striking workers reportedly switched off electricity paralyzing operations at City Hall Annex, Nairobi.

Business Daily reported that the Wednesday power outage affected the centre offices and departments including the director of revenue and cash offices.

Consequently, revenue collections for parking, land rates and annual business permits were greatly affected.

The incident is reported to have more than doubled tens of millions of shillings the county has been losing since county workers downed their tools.

City Hall collects an average of Ksh100 million daily through cash and the JamboPay e-payment system.

According to Director of Parking Tom Tinega, blackout and workers strike had stalled operations at his offices.

“There is a blackout since morning but I’m not sure of the cause,” Mr Tinega intimated to the local daily.

More than 15, 000 county workers are reported to have joined the strike after City Hall failed to implement a salary increment of between 15 and 20 percent provided in an agreement signed in May 2017.

The county government is said to have promised it would effect the payments last month.

According to Mr Tinega, County workers charged with the responsibility of collecting revenue are said to have joined the strike.

“There is nothing happening now. Parking and market fees have been hit most because they are collected daily and the workers are not on duty. The loss is huge but I cannot quantify for now,” Mr Tinega said Wednesday.
