Human right defender Caroline Mwatha’s husband, Joshua Ochieng’ has finally spoken out after the autopsy report of his wife’s cause of death was released.

Speaking to the media, Ochieng’ stated that he has left “the matter to God,” as he has no choice but to accept the results.

According to the autopsy report, Ms Mwatha died from excessive blessing as a result of botched abortion of a 5-month old foetus.

The deceased husband, who works in a Dubai-based firm Al Shaya as a logistician, mentioned that they have “shelved their quest for justice” as they focus of the burial plans.

“The government has tabled its (autopsy) findings. I have no comment on that (postmortem report). What I would say is we are now making arrangements to bury our loved one,” Mr Ochieng’ stated.

Following her demise, the family had dismissed the initial report by the police that indicated that Caroline died from a botched abortion.

The police had also revealed that the activist had gotten pregnant by her lover, who is based in Isiolo, and as a result she wanted to get rid of the pregnancy.

Ochieng’, the father of two, had also noted that he had never suspected his wife of cheating and if she were even pregnant, it would have been his child since he was last intimately involved with his wife in August last year, when he was in the country.

The couple got married in 2005.

Addressing the media after the postmortem, Dr Peter Ndegwa – the family pathologist, he confirmed the police report affirming that Caroline had her uterus badly ruptured resulting to excessive bleeding.

“Unfortunately, I think somebody mistreated the foetus; it has no left upper limb, it has no brain because it has been sucked out, and there is a lot of blood in abdominal cavity. The foetus was actually in the abdominal cavity, it had come out of the uterus because the uterus had been perforated at the back and this led to bleeding,” Dr Ndegwa noted.

So for, six people, including Ms Mwatha’s alleged lover, Gitau Gikonyo, and said-‘quack’ doctors who administered the abortion, have been arrested in connection with her death.

The six have been detained for 14 days.

In connection to the case, CitizenGO, a humanitarian organization has urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to disband an incapable Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board.

According to the organization, KMPDB has “once again failed to regulate the registration of dubious clinics and has failed to prove its seriousness to crack down dubious clinics and to end abortion on demand in Kenya.”

“We thus ask President Uhuru Kenyatta to disband the medical board and replace them with serious people willing to end abortion in Kenya.”

They have however condoled with the Mwatha family and hope for speedy investigations into the matter.

“We hope for quick investigations and punishment of all law breakers in the case of Carol Mwatha and her baby. We also reiterate that human rights begin from the womb where life begins.”
