Residents of Karare area in Marsabit County on Monday took their frustrations a notch higher by serving visiting county officials with muddy water in protest of acute shortage of the basic need.

The officials are reported to have visited the area to rally support for the establishment of a municipality in the county.

Just before the meeting began, angry residents are said to have packaged the water in bottles before placing them at the ‘high table’ presumably for the leaders to quench their thirst.

According to one resident, locals have been forced to drink the muddy water for the past few months after their attempts to get the county’s attention failed.

They accused the leaders of ignoring them despite holding numerous peaceful protests against Garissa Water and Sewerage Company (Gawasco) and the county government over the water shortage but little has been done to resolve the menace.

They further stated that they’re in dire need of water and not a municipality.

“Our problem is water, not a municipality,” one resident said, while addressing the puzzled delegation.

Some lamented that they have to walk for long distance before even getting the muddy water.

They claimed that their children have been run over by speeding motorists while looking for places where they can fetch the rare commodity.

In January, county residents are said to have lost over 147 camels after drinking contaminated water.

The county leaders are yet to give an official statement on the Monday developments.
