Floundering Kenyan Premier League side AFC Leopards have appointed Andre Cassa Mbungo as their new head coach on one and a half year contract, the club confirmed on Tuesday morning.

The 51-year-old Rwandan succeeds Serbian Marko Vasilejevic, 25, who resigned on Sunday following a 4-1 loss away to Bandari FC in Mombasa in a league match.

Cassa Mbungo becomes Ingwe’s 26th manager since they regained promotion to the Kenya’s topflight in 2009, an average of two coaches per season.

He is also the 6th coach at the den since last year after Robert Matano, Dennis Kitambi, Rodolfo Zapata, Nikola Kavazovic and Marko Vasilijevic.

Coach’s Profile

Andre Cassa Mbungo holds CAF A coaching badge.

In his heydays he played for Dynamo and Athletic of Burundi between 1984 and 1994 when he returned to Rwanda to begin his coaching career.

He horned his skills, handling lower division clubs from 2002 before taking over at Kiyovu SC in 2006 before crossing over to Police FC in 2007 and later SEC Academy in 2011.

Cassa Mbungo won Rwanda Cup (Peace Cup) with AS Kigali in 2013 before taking the Citizens to the third round of the Caf Confederation Cup for the first time.

He repeated the same feat in his second stint with Police FC, winning the Peace Cup in 2014 with the current Gor Mahia striker Jacques Tuyisenge as his captain, the only trophy the security team has won to date.

He has also coached Sunrise and Kiyovu sports, his last posting where he coached Gor Mahia attacking midfielder Francis Mustafa last year.

Cassa Mbungo is also a FIFA international physical trainer and is the only Rwandan coach to have won a silverware without coaching Rayon Sports and APR FC.
