Kenyan athletes who come from rural areas become victims of circumstances for lack of computer skills, hence costing them doping violations.

According to International Sports Lawyer, Sarah Ochwada, using illegal substances is not the only way to be charged with doping as failure to update your whereabouts on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) online portal can also cost you the same violations.

Athletes are supposed to frequently update their whereabouts on the Anti-Doping Administration & Management System (ADAMS), so that stakeholders can keep track of their daily activities.

Through this, WADA is able to carry out random tests without prior notice. Failure to be present where you had updated you were as an athlete will cost them a doping violation.

As it is known, most athletes in Kenya come from the rural areas where technology is not easily available and most people are not tech savvy.

Some of the athletes feel ashamed for not being familiar with technology hence they rarely ask for help, which ends up costing them dearly. Yet some of them leave it to their management to do the filing for them which will either be late or not accurate.

Through her twitter, sports lawyer Ms Ochwada says that she faces a hard time even with basic communication with the athletes since they cannot send an email to explain how they got themselves into doping charges.

The pride and honor brought in by the Kenyan athletes should have encouraged the government government to ensure that they are well taken care of and are able to avoid such petty charges.

Sports agencies should take measures to ensure athletes receive technology training so they can carry out the basic requirements of their career as athletes.
