Inspector General of police (IG) Joseph Boinett yesterday disowned the dreaded undercover cops known by their social media pseudo names, Hessys.
Speaking to Citizen TV last night, Boinett called the cops ‘chaps excited with security matters’, saying that they are not part of the police force.
“I have heard of such a guy on social media. He is an excitable chap who has a lot of interest in security! He isn’t part of the police!” said Boinett.
The cops, who use the Hessy pseudo name on social media such as Hessy wa Kayole, Hessy wa Dandora, Saigon Purnisher, Maliza Crime Mtaani among others always give coordinated and timely updates on crime in the city.
Sometimes, they have so much security intel that they warn suspected criminals lest they fall by the bullet. Those who defy the warnings are shot and their bodies paraded on a Facebook group, to warn their accomplices.
However, Boinett defended the police against claims of extra-judicial killings, saying that in most contexts the police are coerced by the thugs to use the power of the bullet.
“Quite often criminals get killed and sometimes officers get killed, that is not funny at all but that is part of the occupation hazard we assume when we sign up for duty,” he added.
He said that this year alone the police force has lost 30 police officers to criminals, adding that some reports from human rights activists are based on falsehoods.
He however said that any police officer who uses unjustifiable force is investigated and prosecuted. For those caught engaging in corruption, Boinett said that they will be dismissed and similarly prosecuted.
“When police kill innocent Kenyans they are investigated and prosecuted within the law. We have two cases of policemen who used unjustifiable force facing prosecution. Also, officers caught engaging in corruption will be dismissed and prosecuted like any other civilian,” he said.
On matters road safety and police reforms, the IG said that they will be making a major announcement this week.
