Marie Stopes ‘Abortion’ Ad Still Running Amidst Ban By KFCB

Marie Stopes is still running an ad banned by the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) on grounds that it is promoting abortion.

The firm has held ground that it did not receive formal communication of the ban, the reason they have not yet pulled down the ad from air.

In case they are found in contravention of the law, they risk a five-year jail term or a Ksh100,000 fine.

KFCB boss Ezekiel Mutua said that the firm did not submit the ad for vetting before airing it, which could call for a harsher punishment for the firm.

Mutua also demanded that Marie Stopes issues a public apology.

“The Board also demands that Marie Stopes issue a public apology for airing such content without submission for examination and classification,” said Mutua.

According to a local daily, Marie Stopes has asked those outraged by the ad to ‘look’ for them through social media or calls for more information.

Statistics show that almost 500,000 abortions are conducted yearly, with more than 266 women dying for every 100,000 cases. In addition, one in four women get complications such as high fever, sepsis, shock and organ failure.
