Gor Mahia Bounce Back With Huge Win Over Sofapaka Ahead Of Mashemeji Derby

Gor Mahia put aside Sunday’s disappointment to thump Sofapaka 3-0 in a rescheduled Kenyan Premier League match played at a bumpy Narok Stadium Wednesday.

K’Ogalo now need two points from remaining seven games to be declared the 2018 KPL champions on the bounce.

The team lost a crucial CAF Confederation Cup match against Rayon Sports at the Kasarani Stadium on Sunday and needed to bounce back ahead of the Mashemeji Derby on Saturday.

Coach Dylan Kerr overhauled the side that went down 2-1 to the Rwandans, giving a second string outfit a chance to showcase their talent and they did not disappoint.

Defender Joachim Oluoch gave the visitors the lead in the 43rd minute after the hosts failed to convert from the spot with goalkeeper Peter Odhiambo saving Kepha Aswani’s kick.

Innocent Wafula, who was the skipper, on the other hand doubled the lead with a well taken penalty in the 63rd minute after Sofapaka custodian Wycliffe Kasaya wrestled down Lawrence Juma in the box.

Kasaya was handed a straight red card as the 2009 champions finished the game a man down.

With the numerical advantage, Gor pressed for more goals despite the poor pitch condition and managed to add the third through Samuel Onyango, who clinically buried Lokuwam Nanok’s sleek back heal in the 83rd minute.

Gor’s next assignment will be against their arch rivals AFC Leopards in the Mashemeji Derby on Saturday at the Kasarani Stadium before they depart for Algeria for their last Group D match against USM Alger in the Confederation Cup mid next week.
