NYS suspects have complained of starvation in their cells while attending the pre-trial conference at the Milimani Law Courts on Wednesday.
One of the accused, Anne Ngirita, through her lawyer Cliff Ombeta, told the court that she was hungry and had had her last meal on Sunday.
A local daily reports that Ms Ngirita has been ‘surviving on the samosas a relative brought her.’ She also accused Lang’ata Women’s Prison management of not wanting the remandees to bring up the issue in court.
“How can we follow these proceedings when we are hungry? We are starving,” she said.
“We are being treated as if we have been convicted,” another woman said.
Lawyer Ombeta sought to have the suspects provided with water and biscuits but the Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti directed the case to proceed.
On Tuesday, the suspects were denied bail and will remain in custody till the end of trial.
